Collide Magazine Reviews the E-book

Monday, March 9th, 2009

collide_issue10The latest issue (#10 – March/April 2009) of Collide Magazine did a terrific review (click here) of “The Reason Your Church Must Twitter”.

Their only complaint?

“A more accurate title might’ve been ‘The Reason Your Church Must Think About Using Twitter to Assist You with Your Communication Needs’, but we realize that’s not very snappy or marketable.”

I love it! Yes, I’ll stick with the shorter title.

I like to describe Collide this way: If this magazine was any better, I’d explode. It’s only $12 for a year’s subscription. Go sign up and get this uber-magazine!

Twitter – Perfect for Daylight Savings Time

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Using Twitter as a Megaphone to reach a large and/or specific group of people in real-time on their cell phones is one of the most valuable aspects of Twitter. Churches often have a need to send announcements, reminders and last-minute updates to a large group of people.

Phone calls are usually impractical (even with a phone tree).

Emails may not be read in time (or in days!)

But instant text messaging to cell phones is the most likely and fastest way to reach the most people.

And here’s where today is a perfect example. If your church is using Twitter to update your entire church body from your main church Twitter account (each ministry should also have accounts for specific information as well) then you’ll be able to send a reminder late this afternoon to all of your church members about setting their clocks forward one hour so they’re not an hour late to church on Sunday!

Such a simple and effective use of Twitter for churches!

Twitter in Canada via Bell Mobility

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Recently, Twitter worked out a deal with Bell Mobility, a cell service provider, to allow Twitter’s SMS messaging to go through without any fees. Twitter is working with other providers in Canada to ensure full SMS functionality is available for those who use Twitter in that country.

Outside of the U.S., there have been limitations on SMS messaging (which Twitter uses for sending mobile updates – “Tweets”) by service providers that were charging Twitter per Tweet. With millions of users and many more tweets per day, the cost was too great for Twitter to absorb. Fortuantely, Twitter is working with cell providers to show them the value of selling SMS packages to their subscribers (offsetting the cost to Twitter and making Twitter attractive for people to use).

It’s widely thought that the size of the Twitter network (over 752% growth in 2008 alone) will make working with the new social networking giant a lucrative partner in mobile text messaging plans overseas.

So, this is good news for Canadians – at least those who use Bell Mobility.
