The Church of England & Twitter

Monday, March 16th, 2009

I found this brief article about how the Church of England is using Twitter to urge acts of kindness. Here’s the quote from the article, found over at NewsBlaze.com, by Robert Paul Reyes:

“The Church of England is embracing the latest technology as it urges the online community to mark Lent with ‘simple acts of generosity and thoughtfulness in the real world’. Church leaders will use the social networking site Twitter and a new Facebook application to encourage people to share their top tips for helping each other.

Suggested acts of kindness will include donating unwanted clothes and toys to a charity shop, writing to an MP about a global poverty issue, or giving away a home-made gift.” The Press Association

WeFollow – The New Twitter Directory?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

In the the online tech world, Kevin Rose is famous for his creation of the social bookmarking site Digg.com. As of just a few days ago he released a new online tool: a Twitter directory called “WeFollow“.

wefollow

The site uses “tags” which look like the hashtags used in Twitter to identify a topic being tweeted (#MHC would be the hashtag for Mars Hill Church, for example). However, the tags on WeFollow are assigned by the users themselves and are not related in any way to hashtags, though both use the same tagging format of “#tag”.

searchtagAs best I can tell, the ONLY way to use the directory is to search by a tag you think a person you’re looking for might be using, if they’re even listed on the service. You can’t search for a person’s name (to me, the most logical search option) even if they are in the directory.

The service is brand-spankin’ new and seems to only know of people who were either A) extremely popular (hundreds of thousands of followers) or B) had entered themselves into the directory. It is my hope that they’ll find a way to make searching capable of finding anyone on Twitter. I’d also like to be able to create my own categories of people rather than using thier default categories. In this way, the WeFollow site could be user-customizeable.

I’m going to put WeFollow into my bookmarks and keep checking on it to see how the site matures.

In the meantime, I’ll still use Twellow as my preferred Twitter directory search.

Twitter Webinar with WFX

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Thanks to everyone for joining the webinar I taught for WFX on using Twitter and social media for churches. We had over 800 registered and 518 unique log-ins (with several people sharing connections) during the hour-long WebEx session.

I want to apologize for the microphone issue for the first 12 minutes. I had no way to monitor how I sounded and didn’t realize the problem’s cause until the moderator, Carol, helped sort it out. The entire webinar was recorded, so if you can turn up your speakers a bit and listen carefully for those initial few minutes, it does clear up and is very easy to understand after I fixed it.

In fact, to watch and hear the webinar, simply click this link: http://budurl.com/TwitterWebinar

I answered as many questions during the Q&A as we had time, but I’m more than happy to answer any questions that we didn’t have time to answer during the webinar. Feel free to post your questions in the comments below or send me a question to either @churchtechie or @anthonycoppedge on Twitter.

Thank you again for learning alongside me as we leverage technology & communications to effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus!
